filler neck problem
« on: 03 December 2011, 23:28 »
right basically when i go to fill up i put the pump right down in the filler neck no probs and it goes all the way in.

when i go to fill it the pump clicks like it does when its full but its not, i have to just put the front edge of the pump on the edge of the neck (where the cap sits) and squeeze the trigger very lightly, at this point i can see the neck is full of petrol but as soon as i stop pumping the neck drains into the tank like it should.

best way i can think to describe it is its like when you empty the sink and it makes that gargling sound? its like that.

ive found a little white cap on the side of the filler neck in the wheel arch and taken that off but it made no difference.

bottom line is it takes 20 mins to fill my car with 25 quids worth of momentum.

the car is a 91 cl with all gti running gear, the tank and senders and pump are all gti items.

the car has no running problems, but this really pisses me off

any help please

Due to the angle of the filler tube and the shape of the pump nozzle, there are instances where they both combine to produce this effect.

In short, the breather hole on the pump nozzle sits against the filler tube, which causes the pump to think the tank is full. (splashback)

Have you tried rotating the pump nozzle (whilst fully in) to see if it helps?  i.e are you holding it at the straight up and down vertical, and not at 90 degrees like a Yardy holds a handgun?

Go to "E8" on this grid link http://stuff.benlacey.com/golf/ you will see a clear plastic tube that attaches to the to ceiling of the tank, that runs to somewhere on the filler neck, the symptoms that you have, would indicate that this pipe is somehow crushed, or bent double, this will cause an "airlock" to form in the filler neck...

I have this, always have had... If you put the nozzle all the way in, and squeeze, it clicks off, and takes ages. What i do is take the nozzle nearly all the way out of the neck, and just squeeze, and direct the fuel down the neck that way. Dont have any problems at all then. I know its not the breather on mine, i have an anti-syphon ring fitted in the neck - fitted by previous owner in about 1989, and has been slow since then, unless i take the nozzle out.

Having said that, however, i am still going to check the breather hose!
