Exhaust headache
« on: 29 November 2011, 21:55 »
I bought my imaculate 8v G reg Mk 2 a few months ago.  Everything about it is perfect, other than the exhaust tone, it is loud and gives me a headache!

The chap I bought the car from had a brand new system from back to front - downpipe and gaskets and nuts (all genuine vw)
the rest of the exhaust is bosal.

I would like a quiter tone.  at the moment I think I wake up all the neighbours just at tick over.

Any suggestions what to do?  Would replacing the rear box do the trick?  What specific brand would everyone recommend?

Thanks

P.

Hmm... I took it to a local garage as I thought there was a blow - they said there were pin holes which they sealed (this made no difference).  I mentioned it to the garage who did the mot and they also applied some sealer (again no difference).

It's more annoying than anything because otherwise the car is perfect and it passed mot with no advisories, but 30 mins of listening to the drone is about as much as I can take!

When you say standard exhaust are you referring to the original factory fitted exhaust or is there a standard exhaust that can still be purchased?  If not then where could I get a Magnex if this is worth a try?

Thanks again

Pedro

I have a magnex 6x4 universal b/box mated to a standard 16v system. Its  almost silent on tick over, and makes a bit of noise when booting it, not too excessive though-can still hear the  airbox roaring away as I like it! Its ever so slightly boomy at 60/70mph crusing in 5th, until the throttle is touched. Basically its as close to how I want it as I reckon it can get. I did have a scorpion dtm backbox on it before, that was almost silent, and not boomy at all, which is really what I'm after,  but just wasn't too keen on the style of tailpipes... I would like the performance of a free-er flowing system + fanimold, but not at the expense of the car sounding like every other chavved up motor out there. I want an almost silent stainless system that gives a nice gain. Too much to ask for I guess!

Turn the stereo Up!!!

Bosal ones used to be superb quality... Guess like most companies they are cutting corners to make them cheap...

I would look at a Magntex or Jetex BUT talk to them first and explain that you want a quiet one and see what they recommend!

I would also check to see what's been fitted by some other dude and make sure it's all not been changed to a big bore system all the way...
