Members beware of bad advice..

Guys,

Just a heads up.. I'm not sure if it's just because times are hard or some certain well known companies are just desperate for work, but in the last few weeks I've had the most ridiculous conversations with customers about what other companies are claiming they can do..

This week for example I had a lad enquiring about a 2001 Astra 1.7 (75bhp).. I advised depending on mileage etc we can achieve a safe 24bhp gain.  He said that's in line with what he's been quoted elsewhere..except one particular company based down in Cornwall (I won't mention who but a theme is emerging here).. they told him they can make 42bhp!!!

I said are you sure?  he was like yes, and I thought it was a bit high too.

Then this morning I get a call from someone enquiring about a 2007 PD105 Golf.  Pretty straightforward EDC16 job as far as I'm concerned.. well not according to another well known company he's been talking to.  Oh no, they tell him that they need to split his ECU open and desolder the chip and install one of their own chips.  I was like... why?  he said well they're really well known they wouldn't lie!!

Then we get a call in the workshop.. a similar story.  A lad is told by this other company down in cornwall that they can tune his 150 CDTI Astra to 215bhp!! 

I tuned a Touareg V10 TDI last week, and the guy had his Vectra 150 tuned by this same company last year and they told him it would be making 220bhp on the rollers!! I just laughed (couldn't think what else to do).

Either people are just easily suckered or they just haven't got a clue about what is/isn't achievable.

Just to be clear, I'm not referring to any of the tuners on here, far from it in fact, I know Craig, Nick etc enjoy a great reputation (and for good reason).  Just be wary people.

Not really    All irmscher is doing is advising people to do a little research into vehicle they want remapped and contact at least 2/3 people to see if their stories match each other

Its the same as getting quotes from any other trades    Shop around and get a feel for what's achievable

Will re-mapping invalidate my vehicle's warranty?

There are several ways to upload modified software to a vehicles ECU but due to our investment in the latest tuning hardware we are able to re program 99% of the vehicles we cover via the vehicles OBD port (on board diagnostics) and as such leave no physical evidence of our work behind leaving it completely undetectable.


is this a true statement? curious to know

yes mate the statement is true but I guess it only partially answers the question as technically if they find out, then it does invalidate the warranty.

stupid People want a gain of the most bhp... not realising having the biggest bhp figure isnt always the best (unless your at the pub)

Most mapping, becuase they aint a tuner at all, realise this and try to scam stupid people out of money thinking they can do a better company than company X who only state 15bhp or whatever less than company Y.

With some manipulated results on the rollers, its a easy £2-300 in their back pocket for a few minutes work and a run on rollers.

Customer is 'happy' because their car makes git good figures.

warranty goes out the window if they find out,  its not that hard for them to find out TBH and they do look for rempaps with most engine / transmition related faults
