front flange o ring thing.... easy one..
« on: 23 November 2011, 22:45 »
right chaps

a friend of mine contacted me about the mk3 8v I sold to them a while back saying it was overheating this morning

obviously in the 8k miles they have had it they haven't looked under the bonnet or checked levels once!!

went over this evening... no coolant in the reservoir

suspicious amount of fresh fluid in the engine bay

signs of leakage around a flange area where the front of the block meets coolant pipes, it has some kind of temperature sender mounted on the top I think

took the flange off and the O ring was knackered

questions...

what is this 'flange' part called... can anyone give me a GSF part number for it, roughly how much do they cost

i will be getting a new O ring for it anyway as this one is completely shot

do you guys think it is worth replacing the whole flange assembly?

will replace part if suggested on here, def replace O ring, drain and refill coolant with G12 plus plus - any other suggestions?

When i did my headgasket on my 8v  just got the o ring with the headset. but the new o ring leaked abd leaked.... took a tub of radweld to sort it lol.

I THINK thats the thermostat housing/temp sensor.

try an o ring with a bit of sealant on it as well. youl soon see it leaking if it dosnt work.

cheapest option first!!

For piece of mind over winter if your changing the coolant already i would by a complete unit which are about £15 and come with the correct o ring  can either get them from vw/gsf/  or even ebay use gasket sealer on there also. Another thing is i would put a new thermostat and housing down the bottom aswell as these parts are also cheap and as like last year on my old 8v just as winter was kicking in thermostat decided to break  hope you sort it out  might even be worth chucking a new temp sender in there also as that can make all kinds of running issues and i think there about £10

Pick up a genuine flange and o ring, not that expensive and worth it in the long run.

Rub the block down with a hard stone or the like until its clean, flat and free of scale.
Genuine VW £20 + Vat, ECP £15 (Make sure you get blanking plug and seal)
Use O ring grease so seal is free to move and dont over tighten.
Easy.

I'd go with Wayne on a genuine part if you can.

so we're calling it a headset flange and O ring?

(sorry can't help laughing every time a part is called something silly)

will get

  • Genuine flange and O ring from VW - need to pick up some G12++ from there anyway
  • blanking plate
  • O ring grease (where from - halfrods?) Would normal grease do?

i replaced thermostat and temp sender when I had the car so I know they're in good nick (one would hope so anyway)

please advise if there is anything else I need to do :)

I have never used o ring grease always fitted them dry, guessing yours was an AGG.

most mk3 parts are next-day order.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Martins VW Camberley came up trumps in the end... popped over and picked everything up

£25 for this lot

1: 037121132E flange with sealing ring
9: 357121140 plug
10: N 90316802 round seal
11: 032121142 retaining spring
5: 037121687 seal

and some G12++ and 20% for mr tax man..

not bad considering...

so took it all apart, put it all back together, drained it, filled it, ran it, drove it

jobs a goodun

thanks one and all for your help :)
