what to get
« on: 23 November 2011, 22:01 »
i used to be in the photography sceen a bit a few years ago when it was all about the cannon 400d and nikon d40 ect.

since this section of the forum has been set up ive been wanting to get into it more and more again, so im going to take the plunge and buy a DSLR. however i havent a clue whats good and whats not anymore.

anyone got any suggestions, the cheeper the better ;) been looking at a few on ebay but as i said i havent really been into the photography scene for a good 3 years or so. so not really sure on whats good nower-days and whats not worth the money so any help apreciated.

obviously everythings going to be bought second hand to cut costs down even more.

cheers

(sorry if this has been coverd before, maybe this should be made into a sticky so its easy to find, then someone can create a list of basic cameras, or after a few days when we have a small list ill add it to this post?)

Errr, 400D?

Nothing wrong with it if you're going to use it to shoot stills.

If you want to start doing video then 550D - 500D is a bit 'cut down' in comparison.

The lenses are the key, really, although it all depends what you want to do with the thing.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

or are you suggesting a 400d?
yeah the cameras mainly going to be used for shooting photoes of cars at shows, maybe some on the track and then general photography, video wise, ill proberbly use it but it doesent have to be anything speshal 99% of the time it will be for photoes. tbh it doesent even need a video function as ide be happy to use my phone

I think it's been assumed you've already got a 400D

In terms of "value" you're looking at Sony, canon, Nikon

the Sony alpha range offers good value DLRs that are great to get you started but have limitations in the lens and accessory range.

canon are because of the way canon and Nikon price their ranges.

canon and Nikon's camera sit between each other for example the mid range canon will be £600 the mid range Nikon will be £700 with the next canon being £800 and Nikon £900 and so on.  This doesn't make Nikon over priced, it's because you're getting a better quality product which is reflected in the price.

Canon offer a wider range of bodies specifically consumer end and amateur.

Canon have been including video for longer so it's more mature in that respect.

Then you have Nikon, Nikon bodies are generally better built and have better low light and auto focus performance than the canon "counter parts" however they are more expensive.

I terms of where to start a better question is; I've got £400 what's the best camera I can get?

Let us know your budget and we'll go from there.

Must..... resist....the..... temptation..... to...... remove hideous Nikon bias from the above post using my Superloser powers in this section.

Nnnnnrgh.

My point was that you've used Canon before.  You had a 400D, unless you *want* to shoot video why not go back to one, with a couple of lenses?  (50mm prime springs to mind).

Much better user interface than Nikon.

If you can stretch to it the Canon 7D is an epic unit for photos and video.  I have a mate with one with a 17-55 F2.8 lens that he uses for everything - the results are VERY strong.  The camera is also very well weather-sealed.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

budget wise, i dont really have one, however i dont want to be spending loads and loads on it, i.e the reason im proberbly going to be buying second hand.

may look into getting a second hand 400d then as they seem good enough still.
will also have a browse around on the internet for some of the other cameras that were named in the previous posts.

any suggestions on good places to look, bar the obvious ebay and gumtree ect.

I'd suggest that you look at all brands.
Did you actually have a Canon before?
If so, then it would make sense to go for another one because it will be a familiar interface, but if not, then try a few out.
But it actually sounds like you were looking at them before, at the time of the 400D, but didn't get one.

£400 will get you a decent second hand camera.
You pay a premium for Canon and Nikon, but there's nothing wrong with Sony, you certainly get more for your money.

For example my kit is (all secondhand):
Sony Alpha 350 DSLR - 14mpixel, with live view and pull out screen (no video but not fussed) - Cost £200
Sony 18-70mm kit lens - £40
Minolta 50mm f1.7 prime lens - £75
Tamron 28-200mm zoom - £29
Sigma EF500 DGST Flash gun - £40
Total £384

I tried a Nikon D60 and didn't like it. I like what I've got and am happy with the results.

Now get yourself to a decent shop and try some cameras out, thats the only way you'll know what you like (Canon/Nikon/Sony wise) then you can look at which model.
