R-Tech Review
« on: 23 November 2011, 14:12 »
Here is my second review detailing another great experience with R-Tech.

My car started life as a Volkswagen Bora 2.8 V6 4motion and as lovely as the V6 engine was, it offered very little in the way of excitement.

The decision was made to replace the engine with an Audi S3 1.8T AMK block and, whilst carrying out the conversion, fit the entire range of usual bolt on modifications at the same time.

I’m no stranger to R-Tech, in March 2010 I made my first trip down to R-Tech with my hybrid Fabia vRS as I wanted a custom remap for it. After reading good review after good review, it seemed clear that I couldn’t go wrong with R-Tech. I was right.

This year after completing the Bora engine conversion, I had no doubts that I wanted Nick (R-Tech) to put the finishing touches on to my latest summer project.

Being an engine conversion that had various modifications fitted at once, I knew there would be issues and bugs that would need ironing out and so I dropped the car off at R-Tech and jumped on the next train back up to Aberdeen, knowing my car was in good hands.

Throughout the remapping process, Nick provided me with frequent updates in the form of text/pictures messages, forum posts, logs, graphs, and general feedback about the car and how the mapping process was going.

As expected there were certain issues that cropped up but nothing that R-Tech couldn’t put right.

The first issue was that the oil catch can had filled up completely during the journey down from Aberdeen to Hinckley and as a result the contents were sucked through the intake system, which then contaminated the oil and spark plugs.

After changing the oil and fitting new plugs, the old coil packs failed and so all four had to be replaced.

Now that these issues were resolved the serious mapping and tweaking could begin.

During this time an issue occurred where the car was running lean at the top end and the car couldn’t reach its full potential. After hours of logging and analysis Nick determined that old V6 fuel pump, which had covered over 160,000 miles in its previously boostless life, was struggling to meet the demands of the new hardware/software.

Luckily a friend had a Walbro 255 In-Line Pump lying around which he dropped off at R-Tech to be fitted by the team.

Following the fitment of the new fuel pump, Nick sent me more picture messages showing the install, and more importantly, fuel logs showing the car meeting the new fuel requests.

The car was finally running spot on allowing Nick to finish writing the remap (which he even did on his downtime in the evenings)!

Upon completion I agreed with Nick that I would come down and collect the car so I could experience the transformation for myself.

Nick picked me up from my hotel that morning in my own car and we headed down the road to R-Tech HQ. During the journey Nick gave me quick demonstration of the new remap…. NIGHT AND DAY!

I then took the car out for a spin to see for myself what it was like to drive and the map is fantastic. The turbo spools up very early and reaches a peak 24psi before levelling out and holding 22psi across the majority of the rev range. The car now produces 283bhp/294lb-ft!

The map is incredibly smooth without being aggressive and the speedometer just keeps moving around the clock without effort.

It’s very difficult to say in only a few short paragraphs just how awesome Nick and the R-Tech team are, but to sum up, another fantastic remap by Nick, brilliant workmanship from the R-Tech team, and another very happy (repeat) customer.

When the time comes, I won’t hesitate to make the journey from Aberdeen to Hinckley for a third time.
