Electric Windows

OK...

the front windows on my MK III are playing up and have been for sometime but now I want them fixed!!!  Basically the drivers window at some point decided to operate itself the wrong way round.  So if you push it to go up it goes down and vice versa.  Also sometimes it will go down and then come half way back up only to work properly on the next operation.  The passengers window sometimes has "one touch" down but other times you have to hold it all the way. That's not really an issue but sometimes when closing the window with your finger on the button the window will just stop after a couple of inches and you have to release the button and keep trying until it finally closes.     The back windows work fine.  I';ve checked all the obvious wiring in the doors and there's nothing a miss.  does this sound like a relay fault??? If so where is it, can it be replaced etc.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

wont be a relay fault because all four operate from the same relay.

My back windows were playing up and I bought new motors and regulators. While in the process of taking out the old motor and mechanism I discovered a snapped wire. Taped this together and bobs yer uncle the windows worked a treat.

Flippin waste of £100 from the scrappy for 2 leccy motors and regulators!

It sounds to me like a regulator problem...
it's operating in the same way as if you've got your arm stuck, the regulator can tell this and automatically opens the window, it works on pressure applied to the regulator (strain),
maybe the window needs realigning.. with the door card off loosen the two nuts that holds the window in place now try and get the window shut all but 3inches from the top, there should be two holes just right for a socket and ratchet to fit on the inside of the door, then tighten up the two nuts.
or you could try and detach the window and unbolt the mechanism from the door and try operating it just out side the door as you will need the power cable attached
give it a go if not its a new regulator but you might as well get the whole mechanism from here in Parts for sale or off ebay

I found replacing the window lifters fixed mine, £75 from Vindi's VW in bedford.

Mine used to go 75% up trip out n go back down, the cables on the lifting spool had crossed and that causes a safety device to trip it back the other way.

Clever buggers the German's.  (but not when its bloody raining!)
