Electrical Problems, Please Help...
« on: 18 November 2011, 20:57 »
Hi Guys,

I recently got an R reg Golf mk3 Gti 8v and I have been having problems ever since. The guy I bought it off was clearly an idiot and had not only lost the fob but installed his own stereo and alarm system - and then lost the fob for that, rusted the exhaust out, put Audi wheels on... It also looks like he might have replaced the boot as the key won't work  the lock and the central locking cable has been crudely disconnected...

After a few days of ripping out all sorts of strange wires I managed to locate the alarm system but haven't been able to match it to anything I can find on the net. Mine was just a small black plastic case with an Audi logo on it and a lot of wires. I happily started cutting away and have managed to strip most of it out without any engine problems (so far...) What I am left with is:

Heavy Gauge Red - I assume the power, remove if possible, insulate if not?
Small Gauge Red - I think it's constant power... Same applies as above?
Brown - Right Indicator
Green/Brown - Left Indicator
Green/Red & Grey/Blue - Go to central locking pump...

I think in terms of the alarm it's just a case of guessing and cutting but I now have another problem. My rear lights have changed places and I'm guessing it's related. Does anyone know of there is perhaps something more I have to remove or is it simply a case of rewiring the rear lights, so that the correct light comes on when required?

Also I've seen some posts about the immobiliser cutting the engine out shortly down the road when activated. I haven't had any such troubles but I have only run around the block in it, should I be worried?

It's not really in line with the title of the post but I have also noticed a couple of other problems - It seems a bit sensitive to stalling at low speeds, the ABS warning light is constant, brakes are dodge and it's physically difficult to get the gearstick into first gear...

I found a good guide on here about ABS Sensors so I'll check them in the morning and put some new pads in the brakes before I get too worried about that though.

If anyone has any tips, links or advice on anything here it would be greatly appreciated, cheers peeps...

sounds like you'll have fun and satisfaction from getting it sorted though.

wiring sounds about right from the little I know.

get vcds to scan the abs ecu and it'll tell you why the light is on.

if you look in the mk3 section, there was a post about adjusting the gear linkage, or replacing if worn.  might help.

good luck

james
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
