Flashdrive/backup for your iPhone/iPad
« on: 17 November 2011, 12:03 »
Don't know if any of you have seen this, but I thought it was a neat solution.
A flashdrive that connects straight to your iPhone/iPad and allows you to backup all your data from the device (photos/video/contacts) via an app without needing to connect to iTunes. You can also use it to copy data from one iPhone/iPad to another or you can connect it to a computer to access the data just like a normal flashdrive.

Why change the already widely implemented connector. USB3?

They're probably only changing the connector to make sure you buy new accessories. Rather than buying an old design of dock for little money, you'll have to buy something brand new for lots of money.

It is a bit expensive, but I think (though I might be wrong) its the only one on the market (or at least one of very few alternatives) so it's a complete niche product and that almost justifies it. They will have had to come up with the design from scratch rather than just doing something that's already been done.
If you've already paid £1500-2000 on a MacBook Pro, £400+ on an iPad 2 and £300+ on an iPhone 4S, what's another £150 for an accessory that does something rather useful ?

No idea, just rumors at the mo apparently coming from Apple hardware partners / suppliers - though I wouldn't put it past them, Either for USB3 or ThunderBolt capable connectors and faster backup/transfer times it'd be worth the change.

My g/f bro has got a USB flash drive connector for his iPad which apparently meant for a camera but works on the iPad, I will try & find out what make it was & cost.

The USB connector for iPad from Apple is part of the iPad Camera Connection Kit http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC531ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE
One bit will give you a USB socket to connect USB devices like cameras, the other bit is an SD card reader.
It will let you read off a USB device but it seems like it can only read photos and video and doesn't work with iPhones either. Also if you look at the reviews, it would appear there have been problems with it not working after an iOS update.

He did say he used it to put films on his daughters Ipad , although i find that a long way of doing things i either use VLC or convert them with handbrake as you get full screen films that way, letterbox view.
