it winds me up when I'm driving behind someone and I see their fag end fly out the window

I'd ban it just to stop that
Why?
The only problem I can think of would be for motorcyclists behind.

It's littering and it's always a problem for motorists behind.
But as soon as it rains they'll get cleared away, it's not like chucking a McDonalds bag out of the window.
And unless the motorist behind is right up the smokers arse I can't see how it'll be a problem (unless of course that motorist is a motorcyclist)

I disagree, it's still littering.

And you're also wrong about it only affecting someone who's 'up someone's arse'.

If an object gets thrown, the vehicle behind is in a forward motion, the object isn't, so you will drive into it.

Also on a multilane roundabout junction, I've had a twit throw one out of their window only to come into my car, as we were almost side by side, but staggered. No 'up the arse' spacing is needed for it to be a problem.

Be interesting to see the figures on deaths by passive smoking/getting cancer. And those of child deaths/serious long term health problems from car accidents.  Then compare these with child deaths from drowning in pool and death/serious injury from playground accidents. I listened to the BMA spokeswoman on the Today programme and it appears that the study looked at carsonogens etc..from smoking in a car with all the windows closed and the aircon off.

Now. How many people smoke without opening their window?

I am neither for or against but am merely testing the logic of the argument.

They're talking about smoking and it being in a car, so other causes of death have no relevance. Other things are not what they're talking about.

I agree that it's littering, but many people litter, as I said it's not as bad as people throwing a McDonalds bag out of the window.

Everyone has their vices, mines smoking, yours is wanking over pictures of girls you don't know on the internet. Each to their own.
TBH I'll only smoke when I know I'm in a straight line and don't have much turning to do etc and most of the time I'll throw my fag out of the window.
I smoke roll ups so they'll extinguish as soon as they're out of the window pretty much, and can actually bio degrade as opposed to straights.

Not missing the point dude, I fully understand the reasons for banning it in cars with kids in the back and company vehicles so that people are not forced to inhale toxins against there will or through ingnorance.

We live in a culture where certain habits or behaviours are targeted for what they cause and taxed to "pay" for the pleasure of carrying on.
By eating fatty food or drinking in front of your kids you are affirming that this behaviour is ok and normal.
By feeding them fatty food or giving them Alcohol you are just as guilty of harming their health as you are if you smoke in the car with them.
As said most people are just a little hypocritical when it comes to pointing fingers.
If we were to really look at health issues and take measures which would improve the health of the world We would not have cars Xbox's or tissue to wipe our arses.
To use a pun this is a smoke screen with little benefit to us other than to fill the coffers of central governments.

Hold on, it's only a group of doctors. The Government aren't even talking about it. Why are you lot getting wound up?!

The point some are making is that IF it did get passed as law (see above, not even being contemplated by the Gov.), then it's stupid and one step closer to Nineteen Eighty-Four, which we're already heading for imo. You can't help people being stupid. I used to smoke whilst driving to/from work and the only distracting part was lighting the ciggie and as with doing anything whilst driving be it changing the radio station, CD, Satnav etc do it at a sensible moment when there is the least risk involved in doing it, I never smoked with the kids in the car either before anyone asks.

Common sense, use it people. If you don't have it, you'll soon get a Darwin Award.

cigarette butts take 18 months to 500 years to biodegrade - and within one hour of getting wet leaches all the chemicals that it was designed to filter out back into the ecosystem
