Sounds Like a Golf - Paint quality not like a Golf!!
« on: 15 November 2011, 13:58 »
After being delighted with the quality of our old Mk5 GT we changed to the MK6 GTD but the paint quality is poor, very poor.
Our Mk5 parted company at 60,000 miles with a few chips to the front end, the GTD in Deep Black pearl has covered 18,000 miles and has more chips than the famous chip shop  Harry Ramsden's. The paint is no wear as good as the Mk5, the worst part VW don't want to know! Whats that old saying buyer beware!

I have almost 8000 kms (5000 miles) on my GTD now and there isn't a single paint chip on it. Pleasantly surprising, previous cars I've picked them up much quicker. Lucky??

I hope you are ok after your deletion from which you seem to have recovered.

I had a similar experience with my Red Mk6 GTI. The bonnet and front bumper after 1500 miles were a peppered shambles. Then, luckily (!), I had a minor prang whilst fiddling with the newly installed sat nav. Got the whole front re-sprayed for a ridiculously small sum and now 1.5 years after the prang, I still have a virgin bonnet and front bumper. Good things come from bad, sometimes!

Looks like a respray will be needed, I also have 3 yearold old 50,000 Saab Aero with just a handful of chips so must be down to the hardness of the paint.

Modern water based paints are pathetic, especially if they are flat and hence not of the metallic variety. The thickness of paint application is also undesirably very thin on most modern cars. It's not a specific VW problem either. Besides, we have filthy and potholed tarmac which does not help a jot.

He'll have to bite the bullet and pay for it himself or he'll be waiting for that flying pig forever and ever until the day he dies!

Our mk6 is no worse than our mk5 was but both have piss poor paint thickness and quality.
