Having diesel problems any ideas?

hello ive recently got a mk 3 cl turbo diesel golf when it starts it drives fine but for some reason its has trouble starting from time to time. it may start up 1st time then go somewhere pull up try it again and nothing has any body had this problem and fixed it or could try guide me my dad is a mechanic and had a potter about and without completely stripping it down cant think of the problem its as if the fuel is draining away from the engine or something along them lines

Fuel cut off solenoid faulty or your drawing air from somewhere

Could be fuel pump playing up not sure what the set up is on a mk3 but I had simlar issue with my mk4 tdi chap first put a clear fuel line on and when the problem happened you could see air in the fuel line turned out the fuel lines in and out on the lift pump was the wrong way round..

thanks guys well we took the top of the fuel filter off and it looked bone dry when my dad poured some diesel into the filter it started maybe coincidence?? this has lasted 2 days starting up 1st time but this evening got home from work wanted to go to the shop BOOM! didnt start took the little yellow thing of the top of the filter and once again coincidence it started i could see the diesel through the clear pipe pumping around but did possibly look like there was air bubbles maybe just me?? when i went to clip the yellow thing back on the filter the car sounded chuggy as if it was losing power  :undecided:

I will try outting more in it tongiht.

To be honest, it has not been a problem before except from the last 2 weeks where it seems to have a mind of its own/

all sorted it was immobilizer   :laugh:  got an auto electrician on job
