MK3 Golf 1.8 CL, Bike Carbs? Scratch that, ABF 16v :)
« on: 14 November 2011, 13:36 »
I want to look at the possibilities of doing a bike carb conversion, what carbs do can I use? What else do I need?

After Talking to Wayne, and its what I really what anyway, what do I need for a ABF transplant? anything usable in my engine bay already? Anyone know of a cheap MK3 16v going as a donor? I want to get a list going so I can start collecting parts :)

Not worth the hassle or expense against the gains you will see.

You can pick up 2ltr 8v engines pretty cheap, do you think it would be more cost effective to go down that route? I really want a 16v ABF but they are a lot more expensive.

I would save up and go for a ABF conversion, buy a rotten out donor car and sell what you don't need to recover some funds.

The thing is that for the work involved your not gaining a lot, still only 115bhp against 95bhp

You need an ABF donor car, as you'll need pretty much everything if you're going from a 1.8. Depending on what year your chassis is, it may have the hydraulic clutch cutout which will enable you to use the hydro clutch rather than having to convert the 02A box to cable change. You'll need the gearbox cables, hydro clutch/conversion kit (I think the 16v Seat's had clutch cables on their 02A,s you'll need parts from them), you'll need 16v engine, 16v gearbox, 16v driveshafts, 16v hubs (I think the last two may be the same parts as an 8v), you'll want bigger brakes rather than the 256mm ones from a 1.8, you'll need radiator, wiring loom, ancillaries, probably fusebox too as you're coming from a non GTI model. To be fair, it's probably worth selling the 1.8 and just buying a 16v
