as flawed as the iPhone may be - there's still no decent alternative.

Try the Samsung Galaxy SII or any of the decent Android units.

I have mates who've gone from iPhones to them and love them.

Android units are outselling iPhones for good reasons:

Cheaper, faster, less money to the operator.

Apple is too greedy.

Personal opinion, but the current Samsung offerings just aren't as good.  I actually wanted a change so bought a Samsung Galaxy S instead of another iPhone.  Within 3 months I couldn't stand it's horrible long list of flaws, so eBay'd it and got an iPhone 4 instead.  Must better al-round phone.

The thing is, I love my Iphone 3GS but can;t warrant upgrading to something slightly different i.e iphone 4 etc.

I would like to see a total redesign including the OS.

If you're happy with the 3GS and can wait, start saving now and get an iPhone 5 or 4GS in 6-9 months or whenever it's released.

Yeah but if it's a redesign I may look elsewhere. We shall see when contract is up

To some people; weight would indicate quality.

I'm only saying that because I'm fat.

I actually bought my iPhone 4 and when my contract was due an upgrade I received a HTC desire HD, which promptly went on eBay.

My girlfriend has a Samsung Galaxy SII - yes it's a fine wee phone and screen is nice and bright, but it's no where near as intuitive and just doesn't 'work' as well.

Fair play apple have you by the balls by introducing the smallest of upgrades every year to justify keeping the price point nice and high, and there's the unnecessary amount of hype around each launch which understandably irritates people

BUT

They're still the best mobile device (with the caveat of it being jailbroken as this adds so much more functionality)

And I haven't even talked about the materials used. Glass and metal gets a tick from me over crap plastic (as a fellow MBP user you must be able to see this point of view.) I have owned my iPhone 4 since launch and dropped it numerous times. Same pocket as keys, used as a flashlight when fixing cars. It is in significantly better condition than ANY phone this side of a motorola defy.
