drive shalf fitment

hello im new to the forum and have a rather complex question about the drive shatfs on my 1990 golf driver 1.6.

I brought the car a few nights ago knowing that the owner had put a new gearbox in but not completed the job. I believe it had a 4 speed box in before which has now been replaced with a 5 speed box. Now the shalf flanges which I believe they are called on the new gearbox are 100mm wide and the drive shalfs on the car need a 90mm fitments. The previous owner had already replaced the near side flange fitting but the fitting is not pushed all the way in. Would I be right in thinking its just a block of wood and hammer job to get the fitment fully in?

Now on the offside I still need to remove the old 100mm fitting and replace it with the 90mm fitting which i have no idea how to do!

The flange that's half on should just knock on.

The flange you need to swap will need the nut gunned off and then you'll probably need a puller to get the existing flange off.

if it's an 020 box  there is a circlip you undo that and then ether the flange twits you in the face as it jumps off and flys across the workshop or you have to help it with a hammer,  getting new flanges on is fun usaaly squezze them in with a clamp and then poke the cilip in and job done

new shaft oil seals are reccomended tho

Good point, well put.  020 is different to 02A.

Can't remember when I last worked on the 020 box of cheese...
