mk3 golf gti cuts out ???

hi, can anyone help ?
i have a 1994 mk3 golf gti 8v, my car starts up ok, drives ok for a few mins then all power is lost, speedo & rev counter die, no ignition lights, if i turn the ignition key off then turn it back on it comes to life again and will run ok, this might happen a couple times then will run fine, till the next time i take it for a drive and it will happen again.  any ideas ? thanks .

Have a look in the mk3 section as this is a very common fault.

Mine did that an the garage never believed me, because I'm a girl they sed it was my driving! Mine was the crank sensor in the end.

Could be a dodgy ignition switch
