My beautiful GTD gone to the great VW in the sky :(
« on: 13 November 2011, 09:26 »
I was in a very bad accident a few days ago - car pulled out of a country lane across the A road on which I was driving home.  She didn't look, "I didn't see you" and drove straight into my path - I hit her passenger door at 40mph.  I turned my car to the left and ended up in a hedge.  GTD is no more but it saved my life.  I emerged with just very bad bruising from the airbags and a bit of whiplash.  I am amazed that I was able to walk out of the car.  So - thanks VW - I owe my life to you!  (There are some very stupid people on the road!)

I'm glad you're OK; but couldn't you see the car start pulling out from a distance away, anticipate the problem and put the anchors on earlier? [Or were you speeding excessively ]

Glad you managed to walk away from that. Seeing as you feel the car saved your life its a good excuse I guess to buy another one.

You have to consider yourself lucky in situations like that - That you can walk away virtually unharmed! Cars can be replaced people can't.
Get yourself physically checked out at your GP (if you haven't done so already) as a 'bit of whiplash' can cause problems later.
Glad to hear you're relatively unharmed and lets hope the insurance cough's up soon for your replacement ride

No not speeding    Doing 40mph - car pulled out straight in front of me - It seemed to slow down a bit and then accelerated straight in front - it just didn't stop! - hardly time to react at all.  We are talking about a country crossroad junction with major A road, double white lines across, there was no "distance away"  I guess it just didn't occur to me that the car would drive straight in front of me and I mean straight in front of me.  Police told me that I was, in their jargon, car No. 2 the no fault vehicle and as far as they could see the other driver had been 'concentrating on something other than driving' - mobile phone?????? - who knows.  I was carted off in an ambulance because of bad chest pain - but just internal bruising from the air bag - I was so so lucky!

Anyway - my post was just to say from personal experience as a crash test dummy - my Golf protected me perfectly - for all its little niggles, I will probably be getting another.

As others have said, glad you're okay(ish) Ann.
Not much else to add really, you've survived, the car can be replaced and hopefully the other party has learn their lesson.

And I'm glad to hear you're getting another Golf (probably), stay around and keep us blokes in check.

Good that your ok.

My wife got hit in her MK5 a few years back head on by a car that had come across from the other side of a dual carriageway, she was fine, golf died though and the focus that hit her was a right mess.

Safe and strong - something people often forget about when buying a car or comparing performance / handling etc
