The ESP Light Saga! - SOLVED
« on: 07 November 2011, 18:46 »
Right fellow mkiv fans, this has been going on for so long now that it deserves its own thread.

Background:-

Bought a Bora V6 4motion, the ESP light would come on above 12mph, turned out to be a duff Haldex controller. Replaced the controller and all was well, no fault codes.

That's where the good part ends.

Changes:-

Took out the perfectly good V6 engine and fitted an Audi S3 1.8T AMK (2002) engine, quick rack, etc etc.

Fault:-

ESP light is permanently lit now when the engine is on, however when the ignition is on but not the engine, it isn't illuminated.

Symptoms:-

Car drives absolutely fine, ESP works, can launch it and the rear wheels kick in as they should.

ONLY Ignition On

When just the ignition is turned on, it looks like there is bleed through from the EML light which causes the ESP light to semi light up. Shown in the picture/video below.

You can also press the ESP button and the light will go on and off as it should, shown in this video.

Engine On

When the engine is turned on (ignore the airbag fault, I've replaced the slip ring and it's fine now) the ESP light flickers briefly on start up then stay lit permanently.

When you press the ESP button, the light just strobes as shown in the video below.

Final Thoughts

After clearing all the fault codes and starting the car up again, the ESP light is STILL on.

I've read that the S3/R32/LCR Quick Racks can cause ESP faults, however I thought this was only under hard cornering and not a permanent feature. Could any other quick rack owners clarify this for me?

I keep getting random "01314 - Engine Control Module 49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent" codes, not always in the same blocks as shown in the first scan. Sometimes they appear in the ABS module [Block 3]

This is doing my nut in, not so much the light being lit, just that I don't know WHY...

Whoever solves this will get a crate of beer sent down to them

wiring issue between the ecu and the instrument cluster controller.

or faulty cluster?

james
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

agreed i'd start with those. possibly pinched a can wire during the install

would be handy if you could find the current flow diagrams for both the original and new motors.

You guys could be on to something based on what another member has said on uk-mkivs.

"Yohan, did you mention you have changed your clocks? If so have you added Immo 3 clocks?? If so I'm guessing your old ones were Immo 2? I had the exact same issue very dim ESP light then on fully when the engine started...

The reason I ask is because when I added Immo 3 clocks to my Immo 2 car, I got the same fault. The reason why it occured is because the Immo 3 clocks get their ESP signal via can-bus but the immo2's get a direct feed. You need to remove the direct ESP feed I can't remeber which pin it is supplied on (I will find my thead on this and post it). You should then find everything works fine.

Found it...remove pin 14 of the green cluster (ESP wire). If it doesn't work put it back and you havn't lost anything."

Followed those steps tonight and can confirm that the ESP light is OFF!
