quick question about ignition barrel change
« on: 07 November 2011, 17:01 »
so ive got myself a complete lock kit.

with regards to the ignition barrel would it not save alot of messing around by just removing the spline from the upper casing like so . . .  and just swap the whole spline into the car?

or do the big/small splines make a difference?  also there is a little grove at the bottom for securing it (im guessing) is that going to cause issues?

thanks in advance

I would fit the complete unit... Otherwise you have to start messing drilling hole into the housing to change the barrel.

Just check your steering wheel fits 1st!!

HeHeHeHe.....

One bolt at the bottom Spine (Needs 2 spanners or you will be there all day spinning it round )
One bolt at the top...
One Rubber Mallet to get the spline unit out

& don't forget to refit the spring at the bottom!!

I need to do this job too. Not looking forward to it.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

I need to do this job too. Not looking forward to it.

It's not as hard as it seems...

Take the steering wheel Off remove the bottom cover on the cowl, remover the 3 screws on the stalks, unclip the wires at the rear of the stalks, remove stalks CAREFULLY, press the hazard button to help get that out without busting either the stalk or the Top Cowl/housing... Remove the ignition wiring..

Undo the bottom bolt behind the pedals (2 spanners) and undo the top Allen bolt that holds the barrel housing and now use the rubber mallet to remove the inner column... Job done...

If you have to take out the column housing then the Complete dash needs to come out.... A lot more work but nothing too taxing!!

HTH

yeah this seems like a nicer job to do, plus my hazzards on the dash board
hardest bit about this is goin to be drilling out the knackered flat head screws holding the existing hoor handles in
