Another Airbox question ......sorry :-)

Hey, I have a mk3 1.8 8v and I want to put my CDA  Airbox on but whats with the standard box?? There is some valve type thing in there and various tubes I don't know what to do with? I don't want to drill the Airbox and panel filter but I don want to screw up the engine by leaving bits off, can anyone shed some light on how to remove it and still have a sweet running engine?

Waste of money putting a CDA intake on a 1.8.

To answer your question though, the flap is controlled by a vacuum. At the back of the airbox there should be an air intake from the exhaust manifold sucking in hot air. The flap will swing one way or the other depending on engine temp and outside air temp so the engine can either receive hot or cold air for easier starts. It's for the very cold countries, not needed in the UK and many of us running modified airboxes remove them  completely.

Why would it be a wast of money with the CDA? It's one I have from another car :-) and Have everything needed to fit,

Can you tell me what the tubes are on the top cover by the carb looking single point injection thing do as I'd ideally want to scrap the whole lot and put my full carbon system on, if they are just vacuum hoses that won't be a problem

If everything is free then ok, but it's a waste because anything below a GTI 16v (that includes 8v) won't really benefit from mods such as CDA intake. It'll gain maybe 1 or 2 hp and at £200 for a CDA kit that's £100 for horsepower...

I'm not familiar with non GTI engines, so I can't tell you what the tubes are, but if they're small tubes only a few mm in diameter then they're vacuum hoses.

Those CDA kits are blinking expensive, especially if you combine one of them with a pipercross VIS induction kit, and a few silicone connectors and clips that's nearly £500 haha more than my cars worth but I paid £34 quid :-) I might just rethink my plans a bit until an engine conversion

Even with a 16v it's an expensive upgrade for no real gain.....

16v's love breathing though and they respond better to airflow improvements, but I certainly wouldn't spend £200 on a CDA kit.

Very true but it came off my old alfa which was on the car when I brought it, so iv give it a good clean and it's brand new, shame to just have it sitting there :-) I just want to know how to take off the standard Airbox and not screw up the engine in the process

On a 1.8 you would better to stick with the standard airbox.
