1.6 will not start - Help needed

Help

I have a 1.6 that will not start, it has fuel and battery power.  It turns the starter but will not fire.

Plugs appear fine and very dry, so I suspect fuel not getting through.

What checks can I do as I am stuck and need the car.

check crank/cam sensors - if the ECU doesn't see rotation then it won't spark or fuel.

Could also be fuel pump relay (no 167), or ECU relay (no 30).

OK it finally started and ran for a few mins, it appeared fine when revving but was very lumpy when idling.  once it cut out it is not starting again.

Where are the relays on the 1.6 as I cannot see them under the bonnet?

when I turn the ignition there is a click behind the dash but no other sounds, should I hear the fuel pump?  I am assuming that the only pump on the 1.6 is the one in the tank, should I be able to hear it making any noise?

Relays are under the steering wheel, behind a cover.

Sounds a bit ignition related - i.e. coil, plugs, dizzy or sparks to me maybe?

Click behind the dash is probably the fuel pump relay.  Yes you should hear the pump run for ~2 seconds in the boot.

OK, It has a new coil pack recently fitted.

After starting the car and moving it round the drive way it ran for a few mins before going lumpy and cutting out.

I have sprayed the dizzy with WD40 and all the electrical connectors I could find around the engine bay and it started with no problem.

I shall replace the rotor arm, dizzy, leads and plugs tomorrow and see how I get on from there. 

I have looked all through the site and cannot find any area or thread dealing with the 1.6 variant, can anyone point me in the right direction?

what 1.6 info are u after?

change the dizzy cap & arm.p when u do it.

I'll change the lot at the same time and see how it goes.  Regarding 1.6 info, I'm just looking to SE what the common faults are as they appear to be a lot different to the many GTIs that dominate the forum. Even the Haynes Manual I have has no pictures of the 1.6 engine and it looks totally different to the 1.4 particularly around the carb and air filter set up.

I am sure I will learn the differences over time but it is always useful when you have a reference to start with.  I shall keep searching through the forum, which I have found interesting so far and it appears to be made up of a good bunch, to see if I can find any interesting tips in the basic 1.6 single point injection........

the SPI system is fairly simple.  i had the 1.8 gl as my first mk3.

essentially similar - clean the throttle body, change the ignition parts, check it runs st 90c all the time.  other common faults are relays, split breathers and crank / cam sensors. I think the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 just have cam sensors.  due to the mk3 age they suffer with wiring issues too.
