Picking up Golf Gti Tommorow some advice on cambelt pls.

Im picking up a very tidy 56 reg GTI tommorow, its only covered 18,000 miles so is like new, still has all original tyres and has been serviced every year by independant garage apart from inital first service which was VW. My question is the cambelt is technically due as it should be replaced every 4 years or 60,000 miles, but as the mileage is so low would I need to have it done?

ps. Im new to this forum is this the main gti forum for the uk as I do get a lot from car forums?

IMO get it changed as the belt can still start to perish even with the low mileage.

As has been said a change would be in your best interest. Your talking about £299 or £379 with water pump done also.


I would consider changing the tyres aswell even if they are in good condition, I think about every 3 years you should change the tyres.

Thanks for all your opinions, I think I will get a set of VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA as they seem popular does anyone know where I can get them other the Camskill as I would Like to have them fitted rather then pay a garage to fit them, and probably do the cam-belt, I usually pay around £200 on other cars for cambelt, would it be around the £350 figure at an independent or local garage as well? Im going to have to wait until the end of the month to do these fixes I don't feel its a huge risk driving it for another 2 weeks in its current state but does anyone know of any snapped cam belts and what was the damage?

If changing the cam belt, do also change your water pump at the same time.

Hi, thanks for the help, I have booked up a water pump and cambelt change for £320 a bit of a bargain. I must apologise for posting this thread as since I posted it I looked on the forum and noticedthis post comes up every other day, I have the car
now and really like it I'm a bit miffed it doesn't have a line in for mp3 is there a cable or some way of connecting one?

What head unit have you got? The basic RCD300?
