FAO Guys who have sprayed their own cars....

Just wondering what kind of paint you have used as I heard 2 pac is being phased out and is now against the law to use it on modern cars. I know the water based stuff is not as durable or give the best of finish and also requires baking which is not an option for me. My plan is to build a temporary spray booth in my garage for when the time comes. My MK3 is the pearl black magic (LC9Z) and want to keep it the same colour. Any info will be appreciated.

Black magic pearl is a basecoat, whether you painted in water based, or 2k acrylic, you would still need to finish in 2k lacquer!

Yeah know that mate although I have now scrapped the black magic respray and going to go with a solid colour in white. Probably vw alpine white and leave the black roof. Just makes life alot easier and a bit less expensive. Seen a white Mk3 recently in the flesh and looked good.

Water based is also not as hardwearing, and takes forever to dry. I would seriously think long and hard about doing it yourself though. Unless you have the proper equipment, and are absolutely meticulous with prep and spraying it, it will look pants! Trust me I know! Orange peel all over!

Have all the proper equipment and am self taught at prepping as been doing it since i was 13 but not so experienced in spraying but think i'm upto the job as its about time I started tackling things like this as i plan to do this as a hobby from now on. Going to be using 2k as water based is not an option for me after researching. My biggest concern is dust but like I said going to make a temp booth and have a massive extractor fan too. Bit of orange peel effect wont be too bad as you can colour sand it down and buff it up.

dust is allways an issue,   problem we found is that haveing massive extraction is all good for keeping the fumes out but if your sucking lots of air out your also drawing lots of air in that contains dust,

filterd fans drawing air in help prevent this

Yeah got a good mask but prob looking to getting something with a fresh air feed.
