Mk1 Cabriolet gtd lowering?
« on: 26 October 2011, 17:25 »
right, my mum has got a mk1 golf cabriolet, its got a 1.6 turbo diesel engine from a mk2 golf gtd I believe. all the shocks are now buggered, its rocking a set of ronal turbos so naturally needs a drop in height.

now this is the complicated bit, we want cheap and cheerful, so im thinking a mk1 caddy lowering kit will do the job as it will accommodate the lump of diesel up front, but im not sure.

can any one come up with some suggestions for a complete kit that would bolt straight on, no effing about.

cheers

Just run a set of coilovers they will be fine with the heavier lump.

Nope.  Never buy a cheap set of coilovers.  You get what you pay for, and cheap coilovers are crap.

Far better is a set of standard shocks and lowering springs. Boge + Eibach's for example.

The 1.6 derv does not weigh very much.

Heavier?  By how much exactly Wayne, I'm curious.  Curious to know how much heavier it is to warrant coilovers?  Gotta be so much heavier that a 1.8 surely?

Well my point / view is that with not knowing the weight of the engine (however it is heavier than a 1.6 / 1.8 that is for sure) it could be better to run coilovers as that way you could stick to a sensible height and not have the ballache of fitting a petrol lowering kit and finding the front springs are too soft.

   So...you don't know the weight of the derv. Yet you categorically state the derv is heavier?  How? Prove it.

I'm just curious about the weights, that's all.

I have no figures to hand but diesel engines always weigh more than petrols.

God only knows where to start looking for engine weights.
