What next

Evening folks,

Hoping some of you good people could help. We have sold the missus' Mk4 tonight and she is looking at Mk5's.

Now, the better half drives like miss daisy, does about 30 miles per week so GTi's are no longer on her wish list

We've seen a couple but I have absolutely no idea what the engines are like in the newer motors so I've come here for your assistance. Fuel type is not an issue for her either. We have looked into the 1.6s fsi (whatever that means ) and some of the 2.0 diesels, the only thing is the latter seems to be more expensive to insure  :undecided:

Anyway, can you folks help?

Cheers,
Andy

2.0 tdi will give you the bigger return in future (except gti, edition 30 etc) but as you say more expensive to insure but cheaper tax than petrols and mine gets 500 miles to a tank which aint bad and that includes booting it to stretch its legs once a day
Mk4 Golf GTI anniversary and mk6 golf tdi :)

140 TDI every day, for me...if the GTI is a no-go.
Good cars, the 140 TDI Mk5s.

Way nicer to drive than a Mk4 and pretty swift too...1.6 FSIs are slow and the fuel economy not great in the real world as you tend to drive them hard to get anywhere quickly...but in the case of your Mrs, this may not matter.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

20 miles a week doesn't really warrant a TDI surely? What you save in tax you will loose at the pumps and the higher purchase price.

We have a 4k budget.

My thoughts on Diesels are that they only start being efficient on the longer drives  :undecided: We have seen a couple of 04/54 plate of both varieties but like some of you say, the resale value of the diesel will be higher as I'm sure we would struggle to find anyone who would use the car for the same purpose. On average, the diesels seem to fetch approx £800 - £1000 more on the forecourt. It's just if we would see that back

For the mileage you do a 1.6 will be fine however in terms of resell the TDI will hold more value and be easier to sell.

My choice would be a 140 TDI

Check out the Skoda Fabia, they do some really grunty little diesel models that are cheap as to tax and ultra frugal.
