Newbie with a question
« on: 19 September 2003, 16:50 »
I have a chance to get a MK1 Golf GLI 1800 Cabby from a friend of mine for free. It's not in the best shape but I can fix that. The motor is the best thing on the whole car. It was rebuilt in 96 and has been modified but I don't know to what extent. I was wondering what's the difference from the GLI and the GTI? Also, what are the things to look for in this type of car as far as rust spots and such? And the last question, how hard is it to get parts for this car? Thanks, David

Thats a good question, what is the difference between the GLI and GTI cabriolet? I assume it would be something to do with the trim, styling, equipment.
As for what to look for, you can do a lot worse than use this guide:-

Still plenty of parts around at the moment although in my experience, VW are no longer selling many items and you're then looking at pattern parts or second hand for some bits.

Hello,
I dont think there is any difference mech.
I think the reason why it was called a GLI is because early on, VW wanted to keep the letters GTI purely for the tin top golf, eg cab GLI, jetta GLI, and so on. :)
