Speaking to your phone
« on: 21 October 2011, 18:31 »
I think the Android equiv. is better in these tests and has been out since before Siri and the tech is old anyway, just new(ish) on phones (though WinMo had it in 2003 iirc or similar?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPdZgt2O2ks

and before you go on and say how the voice is crap, you can install different voice packs (and as someone has mentioned in the comments in the video there is a VBH voice will be trying that out  ) Just a small sample of voices from 1 company https://market.android.com/search?q=svox&so=1&c=apps

I've tried it for a few mins and it was very good, considering I was in a noisy room with the radio right behind me and the aircon on to warm the room up just in front of me (everything in the office is my side of the room for some reason?!).

Next up, I'm going to practise my English, get my future told and speak about shedding a few pounds with my phone - should be fun and kill a few minutes later on.

EDIT: Changed the title as the Voice Actions/Jeannie app seems to have an iPhone app too. The Android Market link for the Voice Actions/Jeannie app.

I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

Question.

Unlike in the video, do you have to push the home button each and every time before you speak to Siri?

Not always, you can see he is pressing cancel after some commands  It does, however, depend on the command you gave it as to whether it waits for another command or not.

and yes, it does calendaring/appointments too.
When telling it to make a note it Prompts you if she should store your notes in her memory or in Evernote if you have it installed.

It'll be even better with the new voice engine in Android 4 that doesn't need to upload your audio to servers to be analysed as it's done on the phone, then the command to be sent back down to the phone so it'll be quicker and no waiting around for a second or two for that to be actioned.

Need to borrow someone's  iPhone 4S and start a convo between them, see what happens

I can see the novelty wearing off soon, I used Vlingo and Google Voice Search before this, which are good and do what they say on the tin but don't interact with you like this. Modified my avatar too:

from

to hot librarian  Strange she didn't pull a face that time I asked, normally she frowns if you say something perverted

and does weather too

A bit squished but my phone is low resolution and only a 3.2" screen, but the ancient CPU copes well so can't see why Siri can't work on the 3GS or 4 tbh

Surely as a responsible company with the best interests of your fans it would be more about giving your users a great experience and tools to do what they want, how they want without making them upgrade each year to a newer model to get these latest features, and not removing/banning or otherwise imposing a monopoly on the point of application selection and installation ?!?!

I think you'll find it's all about the money, honey.

Otherwise why would Apple put most of its manufacturing in the far East?

Oh hang on, that'll be because the US doesn't have the capabilities (nor do we I suspect).

Got me looking at some others too.

The video on this one is flipped for some reason, but shows the applications does a lot, also available to iPhones so the 3GS and 4 can have Siri, without the Siri
