Advice needed on an offer

Hi guys
I have been offered a Mk1 gti campaign and am not sure what to do.
Firstly it is meant to be a campaign model but I am not sure how i can tell whether it is or not.
It needs a respray as the previous owner has started to prep it but gave up 1/4 of the way through, and it has no 4th gear, is this a common problem, will i have to replace the gearbox?
he is asking  £600 no tax or mot, is it worth that?

sounds like it needs quite a bit of work so haggle him to more like half that!

for the money it needs spent on it you could go out and get a tidyish one i spent £200 on one which didnt need have as much work (aint taken off the wheel arches yet tho) just keep cool and one will come along
