HELP 1.9 diesel
« on: 19 October 2011, 21:52 »
i recently brought a mk3 1.9 diesel on a p reg

i stupidly forgot to check the oil and as i was driving down the road it sounded like it was running really rough then it began to run normal for about 500 yards and just cut out, as i went to re-start it the oil light came on and it started and then cut out immediately so i pushed it to the side off the road were i checked the oil and see it was on the lowest mark on the dipstick, went straight to the garage were i brought 1l of oil and put the lot in then re-checked the dipstick and it was at the top marker on the dipstick .....
tried starting it and it'll catch, turn over then just cut out ....

any ideas guys ?

Does not sound good  :undecided:

Start by checking that it turns over by hand and that you have oil pressure.

if there was oil on the dipstick (and the engine had been off for ~5mins to allow the oil to settle in the sump) then there is no problem with oil.  Good to be topped up to max on the dip though.

Would be worth a compression test I wonder, and also to change the fuel pump relay / ecu relay - suspect the same issues as a petrol there?

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

as worrying as it may sound the oil is fine. if its on the bottom of the dipstick it will not cause any damage to the engine, although it says minimum the manafacture allows the car to run under this amount so it won't have damaged it that way. the oil lights always flash on and off these mk3's anyway so ignore that. you should check the engine is getting fuel first maybe change the fuel filter?!? if this fails plug into a computer and see what codes come up :P
