Steer well clear of Boxsters, total engine failures are very common, even on low miles cars, starts off with a very subtle rattle, that people in the know, know about! inspection of a removed oil filter reveals metal fragments, confirming that the engine has little time left, before it lets go! assume this is one of those cars!

JUST MY OPINION

Personally there a 'back up' for someone that cant afford a 911. (fair play to you, that you can afford one as I certainly cant ) but thats how I always will look at them and why I wouldnt get one even if I could afford one! The boxsters just dont do anything for me!

How ever E46 M3's =

Go drive one then see if you feel the same. You could buy a decent second hand 911 for the price of a new boxster, people dont though as they are completely different cars.

Not my thing personally, never been a fan of convertibles and you can get more for your money elsewhere.  However if like you say you can afford it, and have no commitments, then why not?

Early production M96 engines had a small number of engine failures which was down to cracked or slipped cylinder liners, but since a minor redesign in 2000 those problems were sorted also the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearings had a habit of breaking up, later ones and a lot  / most of the early ones were modified to sort the problem.

The 3.2 is a lot better than the 2.5 / 2.7 in many respects.

Not sure how true it is, but I was warned to watch out for ones with around 50k on the clock as they would be due a water pump replacement which required the engine to come out...apparently v expensive.

A mate recently swapped the engine of his wife's 05 plate Boxster, after it let go, cost him 3k for just the engine! did all work himself, and got rid of the car sharpish!
