Monza Shadows from vw on GTD
« on: 17 October 2011, 12:45 »
Hi,

Am currently looking at ordering a GTI but also considering the GTD.

The one thing putting me off the GTD is the choice of wheels, does anyone know if VW will fit Monza Shadows onto a GTD as part of the order or would I have to buy them seperate?

Thanks

Darren

You'll most likely have to buy them through the parts department  :undecided:

Although I'd have a quiet word with the salesman and stress it as a deal breaker; see what they can come up with

I was actually thinking this but wasn't sure they would go for it. Can't hurt to try I suppose.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Make sure your sitting down when the parts department tells you the cost of them.

I doubt the dealer would be too helpful, as it isn't possible to order them fitted from the factory. The dealer would have to retro fit them from another GTI and he's unlikely to want to do that. Or worse, he'd fit replicas!

If you want a GTD then, the standard 17" wheels that come with the GTD are quite superb and give the impression of being 18" wheels. If only the 17" Monzas on the GTI looked anywhere near as good.

Thus, I would stick with the standard 17" wheels with the GTD, which would give you: (1) a far better ride, (2) a quieter car, (3) tyres that won't cost the earth at replacement time, (4) nice high side walls to protect the rims so kerbing is more difficult.

You can then spend the money you save on ACC and attain nirvana.

and while the Monzas are a fabulous looking wheel, they are a nightmare to keep looking that way. Once the whiteworm inevitably starts, there's no stopping it. It looked chronic on my MK5.

The only way to do it safely is to buy a set off parts dept, If you go swapping wheels off cars then good bye warranty should you have any issues with white worm-cracks etc.

I remember all that time ago when I wanted a set for my GTD the cost was ridiculous even as an employee, luckily found a VW dealer in our group who had a genuine set for sale brand new off a new car that customer had put his own wheels on.

^^^ What Lee says.
These things are a nightmare for corrosion and sooner or later you will be calling upon your warranty department unless you are willing to stump up £80 a corner for a refurb each time?

Anyway, the Charleston Shadows look much nicer on the GTD than a set of Monza Shadows would.

The US market GTI now gets the option of those things that came off the Adidas GTI. I like them.
