1.8 turbo conversion
« on: 13 October 2011, 20:52 »
I'm seriously thinking about doing a 1.8 turbo conversion but have never done a conversion before. What do I need to do the conversion?

I mean like what parts do I need in total?

this is just my list, I'll look over it in a bit as I'm in the middle of cooking dinner atm  Obviously some things are up to you and the code can be any transverse 1.8t (as opposed to longitudinal fitted ones like those in the U.S)

*Cable to hydro clutch parts (master cylinder, slave cylinder, and fluid lines)
*Engine and Gearbox brackets
*Engine and Gearbox mounts
*Engine AUM
*Gearbox 02a
*Intercooler
*Boost pipes
*VR Clutch
*ABF Flywheel
*Downpipe from QPeng (ask Kells about his though, same price and better quality)
*Sports cat (for no messing about at MOT)
*MK4 PAS Pulley
*SAI block off plate
*Forge TIP
*Forge 007 recirculating diverter valve
*modified loom (give rubjonny a pm or I think topher knows someone who can do it as well)
*ECU immob defeated and 2nd lambda mapped out (Topher did this for me along with a stage 1 map)
*16v starter motor

I'll add to it as I remember anything else :)

There will be many things you forget about or wont know you need until you come to it. I started from an 8v GTi, ideally you wanna start with a 16v as a lot of the work will be done for you.

what are you starting with? anything under a GTi would need other stuff as well such as bigger brakes etc

I will be starting with my 8v gti. Have been thinking about more power for a wile.
Debating weather to buy a VR6 and transfer all my mods over to it or to do a conversion to mine.

That thread is pretty useless really

You will need more than above too, new engine mounts and a exhaust with a 2.5" bore like jetex are a must.

It's no cheap game. The VR6 route would be easiest and cheapest

Yeah but it's just the fuel cost after though.

Anyone can go out and buy a VR6 :P

I'd say its worth doing the conversion not only because it will be a 1.8t! but doing it yourself you learn a lot about the engine and how it works, with my 8v it was always a bit of guess work and forum searching trying to find solutions to problems, but now I can say I know what 99% of the stuff under by bonnet does, where all the pipes go, if I do get a problem I know what the likely causes are and how to fix them :)

One tip I'll give toy if you do decide to go for it is plan to spend over your budget

Worth remembering a 1.8t remapped is not that much better on fuel.

mine on a stage 1 is about the same as my 8v gti but I also have a pretty bad boost leak somewhere that needs sorting.

ATM I'm trying to find a local vagcom so I can check my fuel trims, probably end up buying one though as I can see myself needing it quite a few times to see if its getting any better. If you do the conversion adding vagcom to the list of parts needed would be a good idea
