Newby - should I get a DSG or Manual?

I have DSG which is great most of the time, I don't like the way it changes down gear too readily, sometimes I want to pull in 5th but it will kick down to 3rd.

I wouldn't buy another DSG, I'd save the extra money or spend it on something else on the car.

That's one of the main issues I have with it...with the TDIs being torquier, the DSG doesn't seem as keen to drop down...but that what you describe drive me nuts.

Even in manual...if you press the throttle all the way down, down the gears it went. Aargh.
If manual meant proper manual I may have liked it more..of if I did most of my driving in town commutes, but as it is..on a petrol car, nope.

I test drove 2 manual and 2 dsg GTI mk5 before I bought my new mk6 and I prefer the manual

The 2 manual cars I drove were basic 3 door with next to no extras and I loved both

The 2 dsg ones had all the bells and whistles and one was a bit of a pig (was cold and car had stood for a while - it improved after a few miles)

The other seemed fine but It wasn't for me

As an automatic it's faultless but the sport mode is just annoying and the manual mode is something you would never use once the novelty wore off



There is no denying the dsg is quicker off the Mark but on a trackday or a good b road give me a manual any day.

Using the gearbox is all part of the driving experience IMO

I recently drove a DSG GTI and I rather liked it except for the downchanges. But I could easily live with that. But I don't like the idea of forking out for it.
Can anyone tell me if they have found a DSG equipped car a tiny bit quieter?

Get a manual or you will spend all day with your left finger up your nose like all the other DSG drivers because they don't know what to do with their left hand

I'm from bikes too (club racing/trackdays as well as enduro) and didn't find it made the dsg any more relevant to me because of this.

i would say the DSG is 100% the best automatic Ive ever driven but it does take something away from the driving experience. also when they're cold they're pretty jerky and dim witted (though i have only driven 2 on short-ish test drives like i said earlier) and the sport mode is awful IMO.

the 6 speed manual has a bit of a long throw which spoils it a bit but a manual gearbox is definitely more involving.

as my left foot has been smashed up in a bike accident i wouldn't say no to a dsg but for now the manual is fine by me.

It's relevant to motorcyclist in that the gears are sequential, being able to knock it down 2 gears with two button pushes, you're also able to keep two hands on the steering wheel.
