help fitting front fog lights...
« on: 26 April 2005, 22:35 »
I am hoping someone can clarify a couple of things for me - my bumpers (gsf big bumper kit) are in for spraying at the mo and when they come back i want to fit my front fogs.

From searching i can see that the wiring should already be in place (1988 Gti 8v small bumper) but i need a connector/extendor to fit between the fogs and the connector coming off the loom behind the headlights. My questions are;

1. Anyone know where i can get this connector from? Is it just a standard VAG item?
2. Do i really need to support my engine when removing the front bumper as the haynes suggests?

And also, anyone done this before and can offer any tips! I am an amateur car DIY'er and am hoping i can do this myself. Got lamps and brackets, just need the wires.

My thanks! John.

The plug you're looking for is under the expansion tank.  The ones behind the headlamps are for the electronig headlamp adjuster motors, a luxury you don't often see ;)

There is conflicting information out there on wheter you support the engine or not, from what I've gathered:
When you undo the correct bumper mounting bolts you don't need to support the engine, but DON'T DRIVE IT like that as 2 of the bumper bolts also hold the cross member.  If I were you I would still get a jack under there anyway, just in case.  Plus you might find you need to lift the engine slightly to get the bolt holes lined up :)

I've never supported my engine unless I'm changing the mounts.
there are 3 bolts on eachside. you only need to remove the 2 side ones of those 3, which are in a line. the last middle one holds the subframe in. I wouldn't advise driving the car without all 3 in there both sides.

Thanks for the clarification on the bolts Dizzie :)
Definitely don't drive it without all the bolts back in, unless you want to introduce your engine to the tarmac ;)

Cheers guys! At least i know where i am going with this one now!

Hardest thing to get is the loom from the fogs to the connector, vw have discontinued it and gsf and other can't help.  A breaker somewhere near wales reckons he can get one off a big bumper gti he has just got in, going to let me know tomorrow - fingers crossed!

Thanks. J.

Thought i may as well use this thread again to save writing a new one...

Is it just me or is there no reference to Big bumpers and front fog light fitting in either the haynes or the bentley manuals?

Got everything i need to put the front fogs in but before i start taking things apart i like to have a rough idea of what i am about to do....
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a diagram of how the front fog lights and brackets fit in?

Or is it really that simple that once the bumpers off i can just go - ah ha, thats what to do....

once the bumper is off mate you will see where the fog light bracket sits, on the main bumper bar, u will see two holes, all u do is line the fog bracket up to these and do them up, u will see wot i mean once the bumper is off.
good luck
