Cleaning the Throttle Body
« on: 26 April 2005, 10:01 »
Hi,

I am planning on replacing the MAF (hopefully soon, awaiting delivery - cost me £40, dealers were asking £80 + VAT) and after reading through all the recommendations i decided to clean the throttle body aswell - which according to most peeps will improve performance and mpg.

The nice chappy who sold me the MAF had the following advice regarding cleaning the throttle body.

"When you take the MAF off also take the whole rubber hose off, be carefull
not to split it at the oil breather junction.
you will then see the butterfly in the throttle body, hold the throttle open
and just clean out the outer edges with a clean cloth (preferably with some
Redex or equivilent soaked on to it but can do with out)

There is a thinner hose that connects around the back of the throttle body,
this is a bypass to the carbon canister, take this pipe off at the throttle
body end.  You need to make sure this isn't blocked so if you use a bit of
wire and make sure it was pass all the way through it into the throtle
chamber, try not to scratch the metal edges too much though.

Then just refit making sure you have an air tight connection, so you will
need to use a cable tie or equivilent clip."

Anychance anybody can supply an pics to accomapny this?

I.e.:

the butterfly is obvious.. once you have the pipe off.. you can open and close it by pushing the throttle open with your fingers.. i've always used some wynn's carb cleaner myself :)

i'm not sure about the tube.. is this an 8v or 16v? there is tube there but it could be for something else..

Him posting a pic of his engine would be the way to solve that mystery as there is a vast difference under the bonnets of the two cars
