Alarm going into Mk2
« on: 26 April 2005, 08:42 »
HI,
i have bought meself a Cat 1 cobra alarm/immobiliser, which i will fit.
the deal is that to save some cash i fit the alarm then an VSIB engineer comes out to check it and issues me with a certificate for the insurance ppl to cover me for theft etc.
i would like to know if the wiring needed HAS to be soldered or crimped (when splicing or joining) to be acceptable to this engineer.
I will try to contact this guy and see whats needed if poss.

anyone fit car alarms here?

i have acouple of questions regarding central locking door mototrs as well.

TiA

it's ALWAYS better to solder wires where possible! Heatshink them too. No point in cutting corners now and having it cut out a year or so down the line because the connection isn't as good as it could be.

We fit alarms at my work and I know most things about them. cliffords mainly though.

what c/l are you using? standard VAG vacume system or 3rd party leccy motors like me?

Hi and thanks,
i would have liked a clifford but didnt have enough cash
i got a Ivanhoe door motor for the cobra brand delivered with the alarm.
I assume it just bolts on and activates the existing vacuum system on the drivers door.

you may be able to help actually:
on the motor it has 5 wires, 2 of which go into a a plug of there own and same for the other 3,
there was no wiring diagram with the motor but the alarm diagram only seems to use 2 wires to power/trigger it for a second or so.
i havent started to fit it yet, but what would the other 3 wires be for?maybe as its a universal motor they are for something else?
i can get the wire colours later but its at work ar the moment.
sorry its a bit vague, i think it will become clear when i start the installation.

Hi mate
A 5 wire locking motor is a master unit fitted to drivers door which triggers the two wire slave motors on boot passenger and rear doors(if fitted) when drivers door is locked with a key or button. If you have an alarm then a 2 wire will do but in your case disregard the block of three wires and test the two wires usually Brown and Blue 12v neg and 12v pos usually. for thatcham cat 1 certification coming from a VSIB installer (while ago!) all wires from the unit must be loomed to their final connection point in tape or spiral wrap, siumilar which must be soldered and sealed (tape, heatshrink) The unit if steel encased must be earthed and securely fastened well out of the way if poss and generally take  your time think about it twice before chopping into it, and not near any plugs as this will "fail" the criteria. get a test light to find things a sharp screwdriver with an earth lead and 12v bulb inside it. Good luck I've got a Clifford concept 300 to fit to mine on saturday oh the joy cut fingers burnt fingers melted trim etc!!!!

yes if you get a Clifford! you should be able to fasten a clifford onto a cobra  not really used cobra stuff but the clifford ones are poo hot! detect allsorts even silent punches so cobra should be similar if it has an external mic, steering column and cable ties is my advice to you for positioning it, when done test it with the edge of a pound coin makes a noise the same pitch as a window been smashed bizzare but true! not too hard mind you! I'll be online tomorow between swearing at mine if u get stuck I'll try and help Enjoy!!!!
