Rear suspension question
« on: 05 October 2011, 16:31 »
Afternoon Gentlemen

Vehicle: MK2 Golf 16V 91

I just need some confirmation on what is wrong with my rear suspension before I order the parts tomorrow..

I know I can get it checked over by the garage however the car is off the road atm with no TAX/MOT - I wouldn't want to take the risk :/

okay, so the rear suspension knocks (passenger side) and when I have weight in the back the exhaust blows - I assume this is the shock absorber sitting on the exhaust as there are no holes - the exhaust is realitively new.

I'm assuming the rear top mounts (rubbers) have perished, replacing these will remedy the problem. Right?

Am I right in thinking this?? Or could it be something more sinister?

Any help will be most appreciated and i'll cover you in glitter at the next VW show or whatever you want?

Thanks

Take it off first and check it!!

No point ordering parts you might not need...

Could be a busted spring, knacked shock & top mounts etc etc....

Affraid my crystal ball is a bit cloudy today despite your offer of fairy dust!!!

As above, get under the car for a look.

your description suggests it could be the rear beam is hitting the exhaust to make the 'knocking' and blowing noises. You may just need a new exhaust hanger rubber at about a quid!

I've had a look underneath and everything is tight and looks as it should, although it it lop-sided; passenger side is noticeably higher.

I'll run in for an MOT on the weekend and let the man who can do his best.

Thanks for your help anyway. I'm more confused than I was before. Haha

Snapped spring - if it's that bad... IMO

Whip the wheel off and have a look closely!!

You can drive the car to the MOT station if its booked in with them and insured by you.

If you were getting new rear shocks, springs and topmuns then I would also change the fronts to even out the height.

You can end up with a 'nose down' mk2.

open the boot, take off the rubber topmount cover and bounce the back end up/down.
Keep an eye on the topmount. It should stay in one place. Sometimes the shock strut can end up hitting the parcel shelf support. Not good and most likely top mounts needed only if so.

Shockingly I've just passed my MOT... They didn't pick up on the rear suspension problem even though I told them about it.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Back to the drawing board, I'll try what you said Mr Blue when I pick the car up on Monday.

Never the less I'm going to invest in some collies over the next month, the standard set up really is poor.
