« on: 05 October 2011, 15:57 »
Curious... my 1.8 N/A is getting a tad lazy and was thinking about going for a turbo?, just wondering how much it would cost to fit? i've found a Ko3 turbo for around 200; but what else would i need and is it that much hassel?

Cheers :)

Far too much hassle! Might as well drop the engine out and a 1.8T in.

+1 better of fitting a 1.8t or better still buy a 1.8t.
you would need forged pistons ect to handle the charge

Yeah better to buy a turbo car its less hassle and they are mega cheap now.  Unless your trying to do it just for cheaper insurance which is a no no

Step 1 sell the car, step 2 buy a turbo then when you get bored remap it.

No point in even thinking about a turbo or supercharger way too much expense and hassle involved.

Would save masses by just selling up and buying a 18t.

if you wanted to go the supercharger route ide still buy a 18t and supercharge that for simplicity.

if you really dont wana sell it or cant afford to buy a 1.8t and werent gonna notify insurance of the turbo look into things like cams ect. though not sure how they affect insurance. could br more expensive

+1 would end up more expensive to mess around.  I would buy a turbo and put all your stuff onto the new car if you have spent anything on styling mods etc.

Also it would no longer be your baby as you would be pouring some time and money into it and probably get sick of it before its finished.

i am in the process of doing just that.....dropping 1.8t into my 1.8 20v na ......let me give u a tip take the front end off your golf before anything else everything becaomes visible then.....secondly ibought the whole car to take engine etc out of heres a list of things u WILL NEED

engine
inlet/outlet manifolds
turbo
your gearbox will fit but its easier if it comes complete
ecu off the turbo
clocks out of turbo as the programmed to the ecu
key reader from round ignition barrell off turbo
transponder chip from the turbos key
central locking sensor located just inside roof lining near windc=screen little black box
ther engine bay wiring harness NOW everyone told me they dont split and u have change the ENTIRE vehicles wiring loom so i thought hmmm no VW arnt gonna make an entire new loom for each car with different engines so i junted for a solution turns out if u open up that like ski slope shape plastic with ur going through it into the car u will find a plug disconect that and thet is practicly every wire going to the engine and to the ecu the only one it dont have is the MAF sensor i havnt sussed that one out yet cos turbo has 4 pins and NA has 5 pins and the plugs are different shape so i will find away around that trust me haha

you will also need the exhaust downpipe with flexi joint and cat as the non turbo has twin exit downpipe secured by 6 bolts and the tuirbo only has 4

sounds hard work but in actuall factit took me a day to take my car aprart and fit the turbo in with wring in and thats also taking it out of other car aswell loln if your local to me feel free to come take a look for your self its no were near as hard as ppl make out ok yea i use to be amechanic but still its ver simple hope this helps u dude
