Three of us did this on my mates 16v mk2 during two summers evenings a few years ago, while downing a few cans of beer! Quite a bit of labour time involved. Car was so smooth after and quicker.

not done it on a golf but done it once on a mini and once on a mk1 xr2. both times there was a noticable improvement in performance.....and a bigger petrol bill. thats probably from using the new found power tho!
