On my Mk2 8v 1986 Gti 3 door I have standard small bumpers with the red trim. My question is do I change these bumpers to 90's big bumpers or leave them as small bumpers? I wouldn't say the car is standard as the previous owner has put later 90's spec doors on so the quarters part of the window is not there. It has had a respray in podesent blue, slightly lighter than the standard golf blue colour which I've always liked. Due to all the welding work that has been done on both o/s & n/s sills and rear valance it's going to have to have another full respray anyway.
So what do You think, standard or big bumpers??

hi Chris ,
i would  go for the big bumpers now that the doors have been changed ,but most people like the skinny one's too .
 :rolleyes:decisions decisions ehh.

p.s can do a trade for skinny bumpers for big if you want ?.

Even with the later moldings, I think if you keep it on it's C or D plate, big bumpers will look wrong. If you put it on a dateless private plate you may get away with big bumpers, but then a quick glance at the hazzard light switch will give the game away.

Small bumpers ftw

This. Also am pretty sure you'd have to change arch trims if you swapped for big.

i spent a long time trying to find a black 3dr with small bumpers... they're harder to come by and they just look better (more retro) imho of course

Dubber36,
"but then a quick glance at the hazzard light switch will give the game away." Where is the switch s'pose to be located? This could have been change by the previous owner as well. I've always loved the big bumpers with the side skirts & 16v wider arches but then since my car is an early model I should really keep it retro & rare...I really don't know, it's a hard decision. I need to put a picture up of my golf.

Pre 90 spec cars had the hazzard light switch on the dash next to the fog light and rear window heater, 90 spec (big bumper) had it on top on the steering column cover.

I prefer big bumpers myself.. think small bumpers can make the car look goofy (esp on non-lowered 5drs). Have seen a nice 3dr white one around my way, retro roof rack, lowered on nice rims etc, totally different to my slammed, dished, G60 arched, big bumper, but is v nice imo. Total opposite but equally as cool
