Great car and the best colour!
Will be interested to hear how you get on with it and how it compares to your old Mk 6 GTI.
Here's an update for you then!
It's already done 850 miles and I have opened it up. What a car!
The engine is fantastic in S mode. Accelerate hard and just goes through the gears (DSG) without any issues. GTI would go to the redline and jerk before going into the next gear. On the R it's just flowless. Much better.
And now the handling. The R can do things that the GTI couldn't even try. Must be the 4wd and the lower suspension. Cornering at speed above legal limits (well above) is not a problem. It's just scary. The car just stays glued to the road. I'm yet to hear a wheel spin. A single wheel spin. Chuck it into a tight bend and on the exit you can go full throttle. No drama, no issues. It's just so predictable, so compliant. I love it.
How does it compare to the GTI - well, TBH I never drove the GTI in such a way - I was too scared. But thanks to continuous driver training I have at work I know now what a car can do and that helps. Anyway, what I remember about the GTI was that in a roundabout it would lose grip so easily. Cornering wasn't that confidence building either.
Ultimate Golf? - yes, it is.
Funny thing is I only today realised it should run on 98... After 3 full tanks of 95

The fuel con - or the bad news - 25mpg measured... The very first tank (98) was 28mpg I think. I'm sure over time with just normal driving 30 mpg can be achieved but as the R is not planned to be used on daily basis that's not required.
Very happy with the car - appart from these 2 anoying rattles from both A-pillars...
