The 17K figure is derived from the fact that somebody else has spent blood, sweat, tears and a pot of money on the car...A kitchen fitter doesn't just charge for the price of a kitchen you know!!

If I had 17k that I didn't know what to do with, this car would be parked on my drive right now. Unfortunately for me, such a situation is unlikely to ever arise....

Thats parts involved not the car! a mk5 r32 engine will be about 3.5k with most parts needed not much else needed apart from skills then put 2-3k on top of that maybe for the car originally. obviously not starting with a syncro version because they are rare but something like a rallye "same floor pan" i am more than confident this is achievable i know alot of guys in the trade including my skills i dont think anything is impossible.

can get R32 engines for 1.5k mate

17k for this is a joke and its as simple as that.. anyone who pays that price is just a idiot.

takes a lot to build these sort of cars but 17k ?  f**k it ill sell mine for 10k .... and you know my car is Mint

mate i dont want to get to involved in this because i know people who build these sort of cars on a weekly basis im not stupid or incompetent and i know the value of things! everything on that car totals maximum of about 8-10k  despite sweat tears and anger i wouldn't build a car and then slap 2k on the price because ive had a little sweat on and maybe cut myself  i think he would have more luck pricing it at 10k thats only my pricing tag and im sure alot of others will agree this car will never sell for 17k no matter how mad you are

The advert is misleading and there are things in there ringing alarm bells, which would put the value more four figures than five.

Let's just be clear here:

Quote
Porsche Carrera 4 leather front seats are fitted but at the time of writing the electrics on these are not wired up.

The seats can't be adjusted.  They're not wired up.

Quote
It has fully working climate control although no air con of course.

So they've not fitted or hooked up the air-con (nasty, ugly pipes) but the control panel lights up and you can control where the air goes and how quick it comes out.  Ingenious.

Quote
It ir running standard Mk4 management with a Mk4 fuel rail and a VR6 starter motor and flywheel. It has a new 3 piece sport clutch fitted. It remains drive by wire.

Let's be honest - the Golf5 wiring was a bit hard, so we nailed the Golf4 wiring on to it.

Quote
This Golf is an extremely rare model being an original 3 door Golf Syncro of which it is estimated that only 120 or so were made

No, there's loads of LHD 3-door Syncros out there.  G60 3-door Syncros - that's another matter.

Quote
.It has alot more spot welds, much thicker front suspension turrets and front chassis rails and a bonded front windscreen

And as the glass-out respray included taking the no longer available screen out it appears this car no longer has the bonded screen (seal looks to be rubber inside and out).  There's a big chunk of that handy extra rigidity gone already then.

Quote
The rear end has all received the same treatment with the rear beam removed and fitted with an extremely rare VR6 Syncro rear diff

Just to square this up, they removed the rear BEAM and fitted a Syncro rear diff?  So the BEAM (fitted to 2WD Golfs) came off and a Syncro rear subframe was grafted on?  I'm confused.

Confusion means a lower value than an advert that does not cause any confusion, or concerns about the authenticity of the car.

Quote
This is a very rare and very quick professionally built MK2 Golf that can only go up in value

This is a lie.

I predict it won't sell and as others have suggested, it will be broken up.

and finally.  What he typed:

Quote
It is my ultimate Mk2 and was my dream car but I need to fund my daughter's wedding

What he meant:

Quote
It is my ultimate Mk2 and was my dream car but my wife's just found out how much I've spanked on this car oh and I need to fund my daughter's wedding
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Nice to look at and I'm sure it's a blast to drive but that ad is dodgy.  Would I spend 17k on it?... No, with my car as a base I think of all the things I could do to it for half that.

17k is probably just a dream of his, the reserve might be more like 10k, and tbh if hes having to sell it rather than wanting to (at least if it was me) I'd put mine up for a silly price as well so when it doesnt sell I can say to the misses 'oh well I did try!'

not trying to justify 17k though as that is crazy

I'm not really up to scratch on my mk2s (I know nothing) does it make it worth much more with it being a RHD syncro?

If I had 17k I'd get an R36 Passat, assuming I'd stay VW.
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

That comment makes sense, probably is that.
