Something a bit different from me
« on: 01 October 2011, 20:26 »
Went for a stroll round Rochester, hadn't really attempted this kind of work before so wanted to give it a go, because we've got to push ourselves right?!

Shot off the hip:

I have a mate who does street photography.  I totally LOVE his photos.

Now here's the weird thing - I've said to him 'publicise them!' and he won't.

He's shooting using a Leica M6 on film.  Here's a selection - I love the guy's eye:

Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

That first pic is good, it's not as easy as i though, was a bit shy getting my camera out in a Medway High Street. Wanted to get some face shots really.

People get real arsey about it too. The king of it though has to be martin parr, Its not really my cuppa but some of his shots are simply brilliant.

Here is a link to his newest work (not great) but his older stuff is alot more interesting.

I usually stroll across to Rochester in my lunchbreak but I too always feel a bit awkward snapping people I dont know. Especially with it being hot the last few days - dont want people to think im some sort or perv......

Did you go down into the crypt at the cathedral? I havent tried it, but I reckon bouncing some light off the curved archways with a few off camera flashes could be good.

Also, if you go again, look out for a coffee shop called the Def Cat - they use their wall space for artists wanting to display their work, so there are usually a lot of creative types in there.

People get arsey when waving a big DSLR around, particularly if you have a large, obvious lens on it.
This is where small/ranger finder cameras like the Leica M6 are handy, people are less bothered when it's a small camera.
One of my pro-togger friends has a Fuji X100, which produces some amazing shots for precisely this purpose.
It's a small camera with an APC-C sized sensor and a fixed 23mm F2 lens. Quite pricey though at around £800-1000.
