1.8t wont start but will turnover :S
« on: 01 October 2011, 11:52 »
was driving today and the car suddenly cut out. it wont start again but the engine does turnover. the car wont jump or bumpstart never mind start normally with the key.

Any ideas?

EDIT: had a new key done at VW yesterday, threw up 3 errors, MAF, speed sensor and engine coolant temp. dont know if this will make any difference?

Doesn't the crank sensor prevent start when its knackered?  Is that the same thing as a "speed sensor"?

Crank / engine speed sensor stops most cars from starting, other faulty sensors just make them run rough and a lack of power.

a faulty crank sensor affects starting from what I read, can't say it's something I have experienced though

if its the same as most other cars then the crank sensor triggers the ecu to tell the igntion module to send a spark via a toothed wheel though some uses the cam as a point to calculate the timing. could be either. i remember my mates 106 quicksilver had a non starting problem after some numpty changed the gearbox. fully trained mechanics couldnt find the problem where as it too me 5 mins

coinsodence how this happens just after i have been too VW, not pointing any fingers  :lipsrsealed:

How much would it be do you guys think to get all faults fixed, MAF, crank/speed sensor and engine coolant sensor?

Thanks for the help

ignore the coolant sensor for now, that wouldnt stop it starting, i doubt the maf would as well but a simple test for this is unplug it and try it. crank sensor i believe is about 70 quid, but usually this only buggers up cars once there up to temp.

i'll ask again, have you checked the timing belt? is there any teeth stripped?
