MK1 Cabrio Bulkhead Issues
« on: 28 September 2011, 16:56 »
Hi, new to the site, but a life long mk1 owner,  I have a 1988 mk1 cabrio at the moment that needs a load of welding doing to the area where the steering rack is bolted to the chassis/bulkhead.  It is a pain in the butt to get at.  I was wondering if this is a common problem and if so, is there a pre-fabricated panel I can weld over the problem area (similar to the clutch reinforcing bit one can buy)??
If not then I will have to rebuild it all to get it through the mot.

Also, the front shocks are gone as well as the top mounts, can I get the complete assembly anywhere?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can advise me on this.

Not sure about a repair panel being available for that area, not a common place in my experience unless its spent a lot of time parked on grass.

Febi Bilstein top mounts easily found cheap enough on eBay.  Shocks depend on your budget. Not aware of shocks being sold complete with top mounts.

I doubt a panel is available, is it rust or has it just cracked.

It is just rusty. When I got it it had been sat for a while somewhere.  I have just bought a welder and I am going to strip it down and patch it up.
I have seen the top mounts on Ebay and they are reasonable enough.
I could do with the front struts complete (i.e. not just the inserts) as the old rust fairy has had her wicked way!!
I will let you know how things go, thanks for the advice.

Ah you said shocks complete with top mounts, didn't realise you were also referring to struts as well.  You may be better off looking for a suspension kit that covers all four corners then as what you are asking for is available, just not sure who sells just the fronts.  I'm sure there isn't anybody just selling front OEM units complete.  Perhaps get better struts from a donor?
