Anyone had this problem?
« on: 24 September 2011, 15:39 »
My Mk6 has done 60,000 miles in 21 months faultlessly until last week.

It started to lose power and was driving like a 1.4 bluemotion - no acceleration (even in sport) and changing gear at 2,000 rpm (it's a DSG) running mainly at around 1,500RPM.

Fuel consumption over 60,000 miles : 34.8MPG. Now getting about 25MPG.

Took it in - said "fix this and do the 60,000 mile service etc"........... 6 hours later I get the call from hell : "We need a part from Germany and it could be a week or more!"

Diagnosis ?........... new cylinder head. Holy Moly......... it's being done under warranty so that'll ease the pain a bit I guess. So I now have a hire car replacement of a Renault Clio which is French for "a piece of sh!t"

Question........... wll the fitting of a new cylinder head restore performance to it's factory fresh state or will it never be the same again?

I presume it is a cracked cylinder head. A new one should restore performance. Happened to me and the fix was successful.

Bad times mate! suprised they're doing it under warranty though, isn't 60k the limit? I've only done a fraction of that mileage so no major issues as yet.

Taken from the VW website - "This means you're covered for a total of 3 years or up to 60,000 miles, whichever comes first"

Sounds like your a lucky boy, is it just under 60k?

I presume your car is a 2 year sample. Hell of a mileage in 2 years. I think you've won a gold star!

Would be intersted in known what went wrong if you ask them as it does seem odd fitting a head.
I have read cases of fuel pump and spark plug failures but not a cyclinder head.

So here we go - got the car back after 10 days............ here's a synopsis of what they did :

1. Faulty camshaft positioning sensor
2. Timing out
3. Faulty Cylinder head
4. Faulty non return valve (a known GTI Mk 6 problem apparantly)
5.Inlet camshaft damaged
6. Camshaft bearing damaged
7. Fitted new cyinder head
8. Fitted new camshaft
9. Fitted new head gasket
10. 1 x wheel bearing faulty so that had to be replaced too
11. Faulty ignition coils - replaced
12. New spark pugs

All done under warranty.
They told me the root cause of all this was the faulty camsgaft positioning sensor and non return valve. Apparantly, 60-70k miles is the normal time for these to go. The fault was know about on the VW maintenance databse

To end this with good news I would say the car is performing better than before with massive increase in acceeration and performance. Fuel consumption down though

I hope none of you get this problem too.
