Generally, I buy new, add as many options as I want, with the intention of keeping it 4 years-ish.
There is still nothing available that I'd want instead.

So, I can't find a silver lining in the opportunity to change to something I want more.
If I got rid, and bought new...I'd have a complete change and buy a Tiguan/Yeti...but it will never fill me with the same feelings I get looking at/driving my Golf. One of those two would be a purely practical, comfortable, well spec'd means of getting about. Nothing more.

Hmm...I don't know.

And the plus side like mine you get to have a nice low mileage example :D

Alan, any chance you could PM me details of how your ban affected your insurance etc?

Common sense suggests that it was this car that got me into this trouble, and get rid.

Thinking about it rationally, it was bad luck that got me in this situation...not the car...

Financially thinking, it would be madness to get rid, take the hit, buy something else new, get bored with that, and take the hit on that, all in the time I'm likely to have the GTI.

Keep it.

I'd keep it, as you all know I was thinking of changing down to something smaller and cheaper to insure and run but in all honesty for me there was and is just nothing out there that floats my boat as much as my GTI.  I've been in all the so called "superminis" and their build quality is miles behind VW.

So I can't see you finding something within a years' time that will fill you with the same feelings that your GTI does.

Lock it up for the forseeable, keep showering it with love from a distance and when your ban is up you will be rewarded with a low mileage shiny almost new again GTI.

I would keep the 3 and sell the 6 if it was me. You will always find another 6.

I could always find another 6...but doubtful one in that condition, or with that many options!

Cold, hard, negative, boring, depressing, miserable, one dimensional logic = Sell the car

Warm, gentle, positive, interesting, joyous, emotive, passionate = Keep the car.

And why on God's Good Earth would you like to be seen in or drive something that would require you to build up a tally of brown paper bags for your head?

If you buy a dull car, they have won.
