Dilema...
« on: 24 September 2011, 10:42 »
I have a dilema...

Since I won't be driving dor the next 14 months or so, I'm unsure what to do with the car.
It's being SORN'd and the insurance is now on LUFT.

I could sell it.
Been offered £19k standard...so add a bit more for selling the 18" & 19" wheels, LED rears and a few other bits and pieces...wait 9 months and order something new, and cheap to insure, in 9 months time so it's ready for when I am...
Take my Dad'd Mk5 GT TDI off him when he sells, again so it's ready for me when I am...
Either way, I'll take a hit of £12000-£13000 on the total package (car plus wheels/tyres).

Or do I stick the GTI in the garage, polish the hell out of it...and look forward to when I can drive it again?
My insurance company suggest a premuim of £1000 to £1500 once I come to re-insure it, would be about right....so an increase of £700-£1000 ish PA.

Hmm...

A week ago this was a done deal. It was going...
Now, I'm not so sure.

I gave the car a damn good clean in preperation for selling...and seeing it now...I'm not sure I want to get shot.

AAAAaaarghhhhh  :undecided:

no brainer in my opinion

keep it,

and take the hit on your insurance over a few years, ( 5 max )  still wont add upto the £13k you could be losing.

and you will still have the GTI grin factor - just slow down a tad  :lipsrsealed:

If you love it, keep it! As Chuff says, £1k - 1.5k in insurance is nowt compared to what you'll lose selling it

If it was me I would sell it ,because I would be tempted to drive the bloody thing and if you get caught on a ban straight to jail !! If you can stand it sitting in the garage for that length of time then stick with it. Just think your insurance premiums its just a set of alloys if you get my drift oh what the hell keep it Glen

I kept mine whilst I had my driving ban. Yes the insurance went up but it will be going up on ANY car you get.

For me its a no brainer and considering the money loss you talking about I would be keeping it.

KEEP IT

For me it's a no brainer, I'd sell it. You'll lose a years worth of depreciation but won't have the benefit of driving it.

I feel for you mate but to me it's the only logical financial decision.

Slow down is easy - ish.
Since last October when I got charged, I have slowed right down...the problem is, I don't speed in towns, and I'm careful on Motorways/Dual Carriageways...but find a nice open flowing back road and the silly visor comes down.

Twelve months will fly by and I'd probably take the hit on the Insurance as the lesser of two evils. Your beautiful red baby will be delighted by the TLC you will shower him/her with during this time.

If your original intention has been to keep the car for 3-4 years from new, then I would continue keeping it and consider this one year break as an inconvenience and a blip. At least your mileage will not increase which will help its re-sale value.

However, if your intention was to replace it with say a Mk7 GTI in two years time from now (that is if this is available in 2013) or for that matter with another car of a similar ilk, then you should consider selling.

It is difficult to know what you will like to buy in the future as there are so many interesting cars being released. You will never be happy with a slower car, even if you don't drive fast again, as they have little or no enjoyment potential.

Keep the GTI if your original intention was to own it well into 2013/4. But don't ever reduce your requirements for enjoyment and fun + pride of ownership of a nice car.

Having said all the above, and you probably rightly feel it is all rubbish I have said, I too am in a dilemma to provide you with clearly defined advice.
