Nasty noise....
« on: 22 September 2011, 22:53 »
Hello! I've just bought my first GTi after many years of wanting one!
Its an 02 2ltr 115bhp in black with 62,000 miles and in very nice condition.  However, I bought it at the auctions but at a good price with problems in mind!
Yes Houston we have a problem!   When wellied from standing start ie traffic lights, there's a nasty grinding noise seemingly from the front N/S. When pulling away gently/normally it's OK and fine in all other gears!

My gut feeling is that it's had 62,000 miles of being thrashed away from traffic lights and 1st gear is knackered?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Maybe a c/v joint or knackered wheel bearing.

Hi Wayne,

Yes that was my initial thought, but it only happens in 1st and only then when driven hard!

I've also done a few figure of 8's in a car park at low speed, and it's quiet then.  If it's a CV joint or wheel bearing wouldn't it make a noise on full lock?

Any engine modifications?

I had a problem of similar description with a 4 branch manifold tapping the steering rack if I wasnt smooth enough pulling away in 1st gear. Made a brief, nasty graunch noise.

Ant other way for you to get the same noise, only when in first gear froma stand still?  Will it do it if your rolling along at a few mph in 1st, then plant you foot?

Thanks for your replies!

Rob: As far as I know there are no mods and yes I noticed today that getting it rolling gently in first then welly in second produces the same noise but not as bad.....

Screech: Hadn't considered that! I'll have look tomorrow.....

The other thing I noticed today, was sat in traffic for abit idling, when I pulled away there was a big cloud of smoke! So later I parked up and left it idling for a while, revved up and very smokey!!  I'm guessing it's the stem seals, which is crap for a car with 62k!!

Cheers

I've been playing about with my GTI today and have abit more info.

A mechanic suggested booting it in reverse, as its a lower gear than 1st. So if it's an engine mount then 'the noise' would happen.  I tried it and it was nice and quiet.......

Drove it hard and fast down a country road this afternoon and through a couple of hairpins.  Going into them lefthand, fast in, brake, down to 2nd and booted out of the corner. No noise.  Coming back however, when the bends are righthanders and taking them the same, I got 'the noise' !!

It's also been suggested that these GTI's are renowned for eating gearboxes!! Is this true? To be honest I don't think this one has been looked after so it may be the case.....
