A reg number isn't going to provide details of the engine swap though.
It will if the owner has told the DVLA what engine it now has in it, as you should do when you change anything about the car including engine and paint colour.

Paint colour is easy, fill in the changes section with the new colour and post it off.

Engine changes require proof in the form of a receipt from a garage for either the work carried out by them, or for them checking the work carried out by you.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

The above will mean nothing to the insurance company though.

Example - Subaru flat four swap into VW camper - it might be 2.0 instead of 2.1 but it could have three times the power.

DVLA won't hold that information.

Insurance company won't be able to join the dots to make that connection.

What you should do for a starter is tell the what the vehicle is and what vehicle the engine has come out of.  In my experience they will also want full details of all of the changes made to the car, so make up a list of what you're going to do and mail it over to them when you start discussing the conversion.

If you're under 25, good luck with it!
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
